Pike Stahlmann-Brown

Pike Stahlmann-Brown is a microeconomist and applied econometrician. He uses survey microdata to conduct policy‑relevant research on New Zealand’s environment and natural resources, climate, well-being, altruism, and the primary sector. He has published roughly 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals, often co-authored with government officials, end users, and stakeholders.

 

Pike is an authority in survey design, enumeration, and analysis, having initiated and led several globally recognised, large-scale longitudinal surveys. These include the NZ (Honey Bee) Colony Loss Survey, the Survey of Rural Decision Makers, the Environmental Perceptions Survey, and the NZ Nursery Survey. Topics of other recent surveys include urban ecosystems, the Emissions Trading System, climate mitigation and adaptation, and invasive species.

 

Pike directed the Environmental Stewardship and Kaitiakitanga strategic outcome in the Biological Heritage National Science Challenge. He also led large, multidisciplinary research aims in two MBIE Endeavour research programmes. 

 

He earned his PhD in economics from the University of Michigan. He joins Motu as a Research Affiliate after 14 years with Bioeconomy Science Institute / Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research, where he was Principal Economist.
