Shaheer Salman

Shaheer holds a BA in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) from the University of Otago and a BA(Hons) in Economics from the University of Auckland where he completed his dissertation on ethnic disparities in wait times for elective surgeries using data from the Stats NZ Integrated Data Infrastructure (IDI).

Prior to joining Motu Research, he has worked as a health economist at Pharmac and as a competition economist at NERA Economic Consulting.

At Motu Research, Shaheer is supporting our Senior Fellow Arthur Grimes with his research on wellbeing and income inequality. 

Shaheer’s interests in economics revolve around economic history, political economy, and economic development, particularly topics on state capacity, war, and the role cultural norms play in shaping political institutions. 

Outside of work he enjoys spending time outdoors snowboarding, mountain biking, and playing tennis.
