Motu Research is proud to celebrate the election of our Executive Director, Dr John McDermott, and Board member, Dr William Rolleston, as new Companions of the Royal Society of New Zealand - Te Apārangi.
John has been recognised for his decades of leadership in economics and public policy. Since joining Motu Research in 2019, he has steered research that tackles some of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most pressing challenges — from climate and land-use change to labour and macroeconomic issues.
Beyond Motu Research, John has chaired the Independent Research Association of New Zealand, championing innovation across food safety, health, infrastructure and the environment. His work continues to strengthen research that supports both local communities and global markets.
Dr William Rolleston, a South Canterbury farmer, entrepreneur, and former president of Federated Farmers, has been honoured for his science leadership in agriculture and biotechnology. His vision and advocacy have helped build understanding of how science and innovation can create a more sustainable future for the primary sector in Aotearoa.
“We are delighted to see both John and William recognised at the highest level,” says Motu Trust Board Chair Jo Wills. “Their commitment to independent, world-class research and their ability to connect ideas with action fit with the Motu ethos and have created lasting value for Aotearoa and beyond.”
